Lesson 3: The Morning Briefing (News & Articles)

Lesson 3: The Morning Briefing (News & Articles)

At 8:30 AM, before you dive into work, you need to catch up on long industry newsletters, articles, or reports. If you ask an AI to “summarize this,” it often returns a paragraph that is nearly as long as the original text. You need high-speed synthesis.

The Briefing Swap Table

# Generic Term Precise Alternative Output Benefit
1 Summarize this Synthesize / Extract key insights Prevents duplication of sentences; forces synthesis of themes.
2 Important stuff Focus on macroeconomic impact Instructs the AI to ignore local case studies and isolate market trends.
3 Explain paper Extract methodology & limitations Directs the AI to isolate academic structure instead of general descriptions.
4 Is there news Identify product announcements Targets specific product launches and technical specifications.
5 Boss briefing Draft a 3-sentence executive summary Forces high-level brevity suitable for direct reporting.

Example 1: Industry Newsletter Summary

  • Noob Prompt: Tell me what this newsletter says.
  • Pro Prompt: Extract key industry insights from this newsletter. Provide a 3-bullet summary.
  • Alternative Scenario Combinations:
    • Scenario A: Competitive Intelligence ➡️ Extract mentions of competitor launches and market positioning from this newsletter.
    • Scenario B: Product & Features ➡️ Identify new software feature rollouts and product integration updates in this newsletter.
    • Scenario C: Executive Hiring ➡️ Extract executive-level hiring announcements and team expansion details from this newsletter.
  • Why It Works: Triggers the AI to seek specific, narrow data clusters (e.g. hiring, competitors, features) rather than summarizing general text.

Example 2: Competitor Announcements

  • Noob Prompt: Did our competitor launch anything new in this news release?
  • Pro Prompt: Analyze this news release. Identify all product announcements and list technical specs.
  • Alternative Scenario Combinations:
    • Scenario A: Valuation & Funding ➡️ Extract valuation updates, revenue figures, and funding round details from this competitor release.
    • Scenario B: Marketing & Positioning ➡️ Identify the brand messaging and target audience demographics highlighted in this competitor release.
    • Scenario C: Mergers & Partnerships ➡️ Extract details about corporate acquisitions, mergers, or joint ventures in this competitor release.
  • Why It Works: Directs the search parameters to corporate metrics (revenue, target audience, M&A) instead of writing general descriptions.

Example 3: Macroeconomic News

  • Noob Prompt: Summarize the financial news this week.
  • Pro Prompt: Synthesize this week's financial reports. Focus on interest rate changes and market volatility.

    • Scenario B: Real Estate Inventory ➡️ Extract mortgage rate changes, housing starts, and inventory trends from this real estate report.
    • Scenario C: Energy Prices ➡️ Synthesize commodity price trends, focusing on crude oil, natural gas, and clean energy investments.
  • Why It Works: Filters out general market noise and pinpoints specific metrics (CPI, inventory, commodity prices) to build a focused briefing.

Example 4: Academic & Research Summaries

  • Noob Prompt: Tell me what this research paper is about.
  • Pro Prompt: Extract the methodology, results, and core limitations from this paper abstract.
  • Alternative Scenario Combinations:
    • Scenario A: Clinical Trials ➡️ Extract sample size, trial phase, drug efficacy results, and adverse effects from this clinical abstract.
    • Scenario B: Machine Learning benchmarks ➡️ Extract benchmark dataset performance, training cost, model size, and hardware architecture from this ML paper.
    • Scenario C: Survey Demographics ➡️ Extract survey demographics, statistical correlations, and cultural findings from this sociology abstract.
  • Why It Works: Applying domain-specific structures (clinical, machine learning, survey markers) forces the AI to output technical facts rather than general claims.

Example 5: Executive Email Brief

  • Noob Prompt: Write a summary of this report to send to my boss.
  • Pro Prompt: Draft a 3-sentence executive summary of this report for my manager, using a professional register.
  • Alternative Scenario Combinations:
    • Scenario A: VC Pitch Brief ➡️ Draft a 3-bullet talking-points card preparing my manager for a VC pitch presentation.
    • Scenario B: Outage Incident Report ➡️ Draft a 2-sentence status update to my manager regarding this morning's server outage and recovery timeframe.
    • Scenario C: Budget ROI Proposal ➡️ Draft a brief request for budget approval, highlighting the ROI calculation and cost justifications.
  • Why It Works: Restricts output to executive formats (talking points, status logs, ROI) to match business workflows.
